my second project for intro to sequential. the objective was to take a myth or fairytale and to do it in 2-4 pages with no words, only icons and pantomime.

this is the izanami and izanagi myth from shinto belief, which was actually pretty hard to do.

Edit: okay, okay, so here's the legend. this is the version that I did-- there's a bunch of variations.

so we have izanagi and izanami who were comissioned by the great celestial beings to make tons of babies-- gods and stuff. So they're going along, doing their thing, when all of a sudden Izanami gets knocked up with the god of fire, which would be all fine and good, except Izanami is mortal. So when she pops out the flaming baby, she dies and goes to Yomi. Izanagi's so strung out over her death that he goes a little nuts and kills the baby-- to avenge his wife's death. He misses her so much that he travels to Yomi and he's like banging on the door like "Woman, come home, we have to make more babies." She comes to the door and is like "Hey, I already ate the food of the underworld so I can't leave." and he's like ".... but we need to make more babies." So she's like "Alright, brb, I gotta go check with the gods of the underworld and stuff. Oh, btw, you can't come in here. If you come in here you can't leave. 'kay?" and he's like "okay." so he waits, and he waits, and he waits, and he waits, and then he's like "fuck this shit" and he goes inside. He's like "goddamn, it's dark" so he lights a tooth of his comb and then he's like "OH SHIT" because there's Izanami, hanging out right in front of him, decomposing and stuff. She's heartbroken that he broke his word, he's heartbroken that she's... infested with maggots, so he runs away. She sends demons after him to make him stay and he runs away, dodging and evading with the masterful skill of a man fleeing his angry wife. Izanami gets pissed, rocks start falling over the entrance to trap him (in some, izanagi rolls the rock in front of the door), and he's running, and running, and running, and then she's like "Hay asshole. Why don't you come meet the son you sent with me?" and he's like "...ho damn." But then he leaves anyways, and they're separated forever.

in the actual legend, after that, Izanami is so pissed that she's like "OH YEAH?! I'm gonna kill 1000 of your people everyday! How do you like THAT, asshole?!" and then he's like "... WOMAN. for every 1000 you kill, i'll make 1500 more. Unh, money."

and that's that.
